Page history last edited by Georgie Ziff 5 months, 3 weeks ago

Welcome to your English 1A Online class information page! This is an entirely asynchronous online class; there are no class meetings, but participation IS required. You will be using both this website and Canvas for reference and submitting your work.

There are no required books: all the materials and resources are online or in the course.

When considering an online course, all students should read the online learning resources:

TIPS for Success:
* Set a Time and a Place to do your work
* Don't Procrastinate
* Communicate with your classmates
* Print the Syllabus and Weekly Schedule
* Keep a Notebook
* Check your email frequently for updates
* Know Thyself - "Make sure you are capable of making yourself do your homework", wrote one student. "Know what kind of student you are", wrote another.
* Accept Responsibility - hold yourself accountable for taking the time to understand the expectations of the course and the assignments.

English 1A is comprised of four components:

  1. Weekly Writing Topic Assignments
  2. Readings: Critical Thinking Questions
  3. Discussion Board Forums
  4. Three Multi-Draft Essays

  1. Weekly Writing Assignments: The assignments are to read the assigned articles and write a three paragraph summary, analysis, and response for each article about writing (thesis statements, essay structure, paragraphs, etc).

  • Paragraph one summarizes the article, identifying the main points and discussing what the article is about.
  • Paragraph two analyzes the rhetorical differences in the materials in terms of audience/purpose and effectiveness.
  • Paragraph three is your response, framed in terms of how the ideas relate to you and your academic writing experience.

  2. Critical Thinking Reading Questions

    For each multi-draft essay, you will read about language. Each reading assignment includes critical thinking questions, to which you will respond while using the          article as a reference. Responses are due Sunday 11:59pm.

3. Discussion Board

The topics for discussions are in response to writing topics and the readings in the course. Your task is to first post your ideas with at least 250 words to the Discussion Board, and then response with at least 100 words to each of the posts of TWO classmates by Sunday 11:59pm.

4. Multi-Draft Essays:

You will write three essays in the class that will include required multiple drafts and online peer reviews. Grading is based on overall writing quality and    improvement. To better understand what a good essay is, read the Essay Grading Rubric.
